Study & Development of new MAX phases (TiM)-A-X) for high temperature applications. [2022-2024]

This project aims to propose new materials, belonging to the phases MAX class, with high   mechanical properties and resistance to oxidation better than those of traditional materials used in extreme conditions, such as steels and nickel based alloys. To this purpose, an experimental approach in combination with first-principles calculations are conducted. The calculations part will mainly focuse on the effect of many alloying elements on the thermal conductivity as well as the thermodynamic properties of the MAX phases ((TiM)-A-X). (M=Cr, V, Mn and Mo; A= Al and Si; X= C and B). Our interest, will also be focused on  the stability and mechanical properties of the different systems at low, medium and high temperatures.  These computations will allow us to make an optimal choice of elements (composition/concentration) in order to proceed to the elaboration of these materials. The elaboration of these phases will be done by means of the modified molten-salt method which allows a substantial reduction of the production costs. Once elaborated, these materials will be the subject of a detailed microstructural and mechanical studies.
